Research abstract

The overall goal of the proposed effort is to provide the U.S.Navy with a working prototype of a operator autocue system forairborne wake detection. Input to this system will consist ofthe real-time imagery collected by a sensitive EO/IR sensorcurrently being adapted for dedicated airborne surveillance anddetection. During the base portion of the proposed Phase IIeffort, we will extend and optimize a set of detection algorithmsdeveloped and tested during Phase I, and demonstrate theirability in a non-real-time format for wake detection andautocuing. We will also perform a series of analyses designed to(1) assess the sensor imagery simulation capabilities of existingwake/IR propagation models, (2) determine the performancecharacteristics (probability of detection as a function of falsealarm rate) of the detection system over a range of environmentaland operational parameters, and (3) analyze the concept ofoperations for use of the sensor in combination with othersurveillance data. In the option phase of the Phase II effort,we will perform a requirements analysis and develop a detaileddesign for the real-time detection autocue processor, and beginwork on a prototype. Additional options will carry the real-timeprocessor work through integration and ground testing phases.
