Research abstract
PSR proposes to design and develop an end-to-end validated computer model for simulating the potential performance degradation of a pilot/vehicle operator as a result of increased glare produced by an external low power laser or other source of illumination. The model will cascade modules that respectively incorporate the 1) target/object of intended pilot observation, 2) the laser/source of external illumination, 3) atmospheric propagation from each of these sources to the platform, 4) propagation through the canopy or windshield, 5) from the inner surface of the canopy to the operator's eyeball, 6) the eyeball itself, and finally, 7) a tactical decision module. The model will permit performance evaluation and sensitivity studies associated with the variation of the relevant independent parameters associated with each module. The model will be validated by laboratory measurements of a simulated engagement using an argon-ion laser and canopy.
