Research abstract

The development plan described in this proposal is for a modular, transportable COIL device, adapted for long run times, and employing a fiber-optic beam delivery system. Fiber-optic delivery will allow for remote manual and robotic cutting or welding of thick metal objects, with various compositions and geometries, and in areas with restricted access. These attributes make such a system attractive for environmental applications in the Decontamination and Dismantlement (D&D) of nuclear reactor and weapon facilities and individual weapons.
