Research abstract

We propose the use of our patented Low Temperature Arc Vapor Deposition (LTAVD) process to deposit protective coatings on composite structures to promote oxidation resistance, wear resistance and damage protection. We will demonstrate proof of concept and deliver representative test samples to the government. Present plans are to deposit coatings of titanium nitride onto composites and to experiment with other coatings such as TiB(2), ZrB(2), and HfB(2) possibly alloyed with aluminum or choromium. Titanium nitride is particularly good for wear resistance, providing a hardness near diamond. The diborides are oxidation resistant refractory materials investigated in the 1960's for use on hypersonic vehicle heading edges. Other materials will also be investigated, building on previous work with Cu-Cr coatings on Cu-Nb microcomposites (ref.6). Indium Tin Oxide coatings will be investigated for graphite reinforced epoxy structures to provide protection against erosion of low earth orbiting space vehicle structures in the atomic oxygen environment while also giving it an electrically conductive surface.
