Research abstract

THIS WORK IS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP A DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING SOLUTION TO THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL PROBLEM. THE SYSTEM WILL USE A HOST COMPUTER FOR THE STORAGE OF LARGE STRUCTURAL DATABASES, AND WILL ALLOW THE SELECTION OF RECORDS BASED ON STRUCTURAL FEATURES, INCLUDING STEREO-CHEMICAL (3-D) FEATURES, FOR DOWN LOAD, DISPLAY, AND FURTHER MANIPULATION AT A USER WORKSTATION. PUBLICATION QUALITY PRINTING WILL BE SUPPORTED AT THE WORKSTATION ON WIDELY AVAILABLE PRINTERS, IBM PC-COMPATIBLE WORKSTATIONS WILL BE SUPPORTED, AS WILL USER TRANSPARENT DIAL-UP COMMUNICATIONS, AND POSSIBLY LOCAL AREA NETWORKS. BOTH MICROCOMPUTER AND LARGER HOSTS WILL BE SUPPORTED. THE RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE THE STATE-OF-THE-ART IN COMPUTER STORAGE AND MANIPULATION OF CHEMICAL STRUCTURES, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME CONSIDERABLY REDUCING THE COST TO THE USER. SOLUTIONS TO SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE, AND TO GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE ARE PROPOSED.
