Research abstract

DESE proposes to utilize its Image Enhancement System (IES) to accept inputs from a secondary sensor on High Spped Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM), process secondary sensor information, and passs target lacation to guidance contrl system when EM radiation source is lost during flight. IES will allow HAARM to continue to track a target and guide missile into target even when target has quit radiating. Since standard sensor on HARMs is currently an EM sensor, proposed secondary sensor will be either visual or IR. TI, whch is system integrator for HSATM program has agreed to provide DESE access to their technical expertise and collection of rugged/reliable sensors. Hardware sensor could also be selected by contracting agency since IES is compatible with any type of sensor whcih can produce a two-dimensional image. IES is a colletion of software routines which provides, in addition to standard image processing techniques, new edge detectors, image enchancers, and knowledge basaed control structure to solve very difficult imaging problems. IES has been shown to be effective in Anti-Satellite program and is in proecess of transitioning to a Phase III program, the first Phase III project sponsored by Space and Strategic Defense Command.
