Research abstract
The demonstration of the capability to shoot projectiles at high speed under water opens a range of possibilities for both military and commercial customers. This high speed is possible through the formation of a vapor cavity around the projectile, which is called supercavitation. By reducing the drag on the projectile in this manner, speed in excess of 1000 meters per second are possible. The military applications of such a projectile range from torpedo defense to ice penetration. An interesting application for the commercial sector is the penetration of the sea floor for anchoring platforms or sampling the bottom. Such sea floor penetration has historically been a costly and labor-intensive operation. By applying system evaluation concepts to generate operational requirements for the military and commercial applications of such a projectile, a useful, low-cost alternative may be developed with industry involvement. This effort will complement current research efforts and lead to an Operational Requirements Document to develop the Adaptable High Speed Undersea Munition in support of its military and commercial missions.
