Research abstract

The proposed work will decrease the computer CPU time required for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) caluations by two orders of magnitude relative to CFD methods currently used for design. This will be done through the use of high-accuracy spatial discretization schemes and high-over outer boundary conditions t decrease grid sizes, and by the development of improved convergence algorithms compatible with these high-order schemes. The ability of high-accuracy spatial discretizations and boundary conditions to decrease grid sizes, and by the development of improved covergence algorithms compatible with these high-order schemes. The ability of high-accuracy spatial discretizations and boundary conditions to reduce grid size requirements for three-dimensional problems by factors ranging fromm 1000-6000 has already been shown for simple geometries. The objective of the Phase I work will be to demonsrate the reduced grid sizes requirements for more complicated geometries and to begin the development of improved time-stepping algorithms. At the end of Phase II, it is anticipated that a CFD code will be produced for which computer CPU hours required for accurate solutions will be reduced by a factor of 100. Calculation time for the code will be fast enough for use in integrated design processes of advanced air vehicles.
