Research abstract

Threat detection for active hit avoidance is characterized by very high speed targets with a very small radar cross section. The problem is further exacerbated by the range and the false alarm rate requirements. Time Modulated Ultra-Wideband (TM-UWB) hasa fundamental advantage for this application. Since only single pulses are generated and detected individually rather that the conventional long burse of cycles, there is the possibility for faster response which is critical for this application. Thereare many other advantages in terms of size, cost, covertness, ability to perform electronic beam forming and beam steering, etc. IAI has demonstrated the time domain analog of Doppler shift, which for TM-UWB is a shift in time. If the target is moving, the time spacing between the pulses will be shifted in time by the time it takes light to travel twice the distance (there and back) that the target has moved from one pulse to the next. Our hardware is able to measure pulse durations of down to 3picoseconds, this shift is measurable and can be used to separate moving from stationary targets. With the use of TM-UWB Doppler radar, it is possible to detect high speed threats within the range of interest. TM-UWB hit avoidance radar has apotentially large military market, however the technology developed for TM-UWB hit avoidance radar also has dual use applications, such as: intrusion detection, collision avoidance, traffic monitoring, automobile speed measurement, etc. TM-UWB radar isalso a very promising technology for terrain mapping, through wall imaging, mine detection, and perimeter defense.
