Research abstract

Virtual displays have tremendous potential in defense applications such as virtual reality training, battlefield support, and information systems. Full color displays require red, blue, and green LED arrays of which only red is commercially available. This program teams ATMI, a recognized leader in the GaN growth community, with Reflection Technology, a leader in virtual display technology. ATMI will fabricate blue-green LED arrays suitable for use in Reflection Technology's scanned linear array display. Reflection Technology will provide initial LED array designs as well as perform some characterization on the resulting arrays. In Phase I we will grow InGaN-GaN heterostructures by MOVPE, fabricate these devices into LED arrays, characterize the LEDs, and Reflection Technology will characterize the array in a display testbed. In Phase II, ATMI will fabricate multiplexed blue-green LED arrays capable of VGA resolution. In Phase III ATMI and Reflection Technology will commercialize the LED arrays for displays and scale-up production for high-volume production. Scanned linear array imaging using nitride-based LED arrays combined with red LED arrays already available will be capable of delivering full-color displays. In addition to the military uses, these displays have applications as head mounted displays for personal computers, video games and mobile World Wide Web browsers.
