Research abstract

65566 High-gradient radio frequency (rf) accelerators based on microwave sources at relatively high frequencies are needed for high energy physics research. However, no high-power components providing both transmission and proper feed of the accelerating structure are currently available. This project will design, fabricate and test a complete set of components for transmission and control of microwave radiation in a future high-gradient linear collider operating at 34.272 GHz. Both low power and high power tests of the components will be performed. Phase I will perform detailed design computations to determine which of two quasi-optical delay line distribution system (DLDS) design concepts provides the greatest performance and simplicity. Key components such as a power combiner/splitter, a controllable launcher, a low-loss miter bend, a mode converter, and up- and down-tapers will be developed and tested at low power Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the awardee: High-performance, high-power rf accelerator components should find uses as feed for test accelerators, and in millimeter-wave radar and millimeter-wave communication systems
