Research abstract

A new steam-castable, superior performing explosive under development by the Army is 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ), which was first prepared in 1983 at Fluorochem, Inc. The compound is less sensitive than RDX or HMX and also has superior performance as an explosive. It is markedly more powerful than LX-14, the Army's most powerful in-service explosive formulation. The greatest drawback to large scale implementation of TNAZ in military systems is its high production cost. This proposal outlines a new alternate route to TNAZ that is expected to result in substantial manufacturing cost reductions. The availability of TNAZ at reasonable cost would make its implementation feasible for ordnance systems and rocket propellants. Potential civilian applications include commercial rockets and demolition explosives.
