Research abstract

The projective is to develop methods by which a new class of X-ray sources, with a small focal spot and high X-ray flux, the NanoRay tube, can be used in NDE methods for evaluation advanced composites and composites processing. Within the scope of Phase I, work methods will be developed for evaluating prepreg materials after layup and prior to curing and finished polymer-based composites. The principle effort will be to investigate the X-ray beam energy requirements to achieve satisfactory imaging of (i) prepreg materials after vacuum compression prior to molding, and (ii) composite structures after curing. A preliminary examination will be made of images generated by a 10 micron X-ray source. NDE based on X-ray transmission offers the opportunity to obtain precision real-time data on the condition of composite materials prior to use and immediately after molding or curing. The technology emerging from this project will have value in the manufacture of all classes of fiber reinforced composite materials.
