Research abstract

The objective of the proposed effort is to mature and support integration and testing of PCKA’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and phase balancer technology into a submarine platform and development of future variants or upgrades. Traditional UPS applications are typically not optimized for weight and volume, and utilize bulky lead-acid batteries that provide significantly more energy storage than is needed for naval bus-transfer holdup applications. The proposed converter utilizes wide-bandgap semiconductors and right-sized energy storage to enable a significant reduction in weight and volume compared to existing shipboard UPS solutions. The proposed UPS will provide continuous power to critical loads during bus transfers and will reduce load inrush on the generation system following a bus-transfer event.
