Research abstract

THIS PROJECT PRESENTS A RESEARCH EFFORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A POWER PLANT SIMULATOR USING PARALLEL COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE. BY DESIGN, PLANT SIMULATORS UTILIZE COMPLICATED MATHEMATICAL MODELS REQUIRING EXCESSIVE COMPUTING RESOURCES. HOWEVER, SINCE TRADITIONALLY THEY ARE IMPLEMENTED IN A UNIPROCESSING ENVIRONMENT, THEY HAVE LOW COMPUTING SPEEDS ON MODERATELY PRICED HARDWARE. AS A RESULT, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN VERY EFFECTIVE IN MANY REAL-WORLD SITUATIONS. TO IMPROVE COMPUTING SPEEDS (E.G., TO ACHIEVE FASTER THAN REAL-TIME EXECUTIONS), SOME SIMULATORS HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED ON HIGH END HARDWARE PLATFORMS, WHICH MAKES THEM VERY EXPENSIVE FOR MOST POWER PLANTS. THE NEW GENERATION SIMULATOR PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE WITH EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF NEW INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING. THE PROJECT IS CREATING PLANT MODELS FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN PARALLEL PROCESSING ARCHITECTURE, AND GENERATING ASSOCIATED ALGORITHMS AND HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE FOR PARALLEL PROCESSING. THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IS BEING CONDUCTED BY A TEAM CONSISTING OF PLANT MODELING EXPERTS, EXPERTS IN PARALLEL COMPUTING RESEARCH, AND RESEARCHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE IN CREATING SIMULATIONS APPLICATIONS USING PARALLEL COMPUTING.
