Research abstract
Not Available The use of mine warfare (MIW) by potential adversaries poses a severe threat to Naval operations in the littoral environment. However, the explosive growth in the area of information technology and the development and introduction of more capable intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms provide a tremendous opportunity for addressing this threat and enhancing Naval warfighting capabilities. The management, processing, and fusion of mine warfare ISR information, in tandem with the requisite assessment of enemy mine laying capabilities, intent, and objectives, form a critical element of Navy littoral environment operations. Additionally, the rapid and verifiable generation of appropriate response recommendations is also of paramount importance. Here, we propose a Maritime Intelligent Decision Aiding System (MIDAS) for enhancing tactical organic mine countermeasures (MCM) operations. Our novel system integrates a Bayesian belief network approach to support situation assessment and diagnostic and inferential reasoning, a fuzzy logic expert system-based approach for event detection and threat assessment analysis, and an argumentation-based mechanism for construction and evaluation of appropriate response recommendations. We see considerable potential for this approach in enhancing existing Navy tactical MCM systems and addressing future information dominated battlespace requirements.
