Research abstract
A real-time non-intrusive turbine engine exhaust particulate monitor, based on simultaneous multi-wavelength backscattering and extinction measurements, has been proposed herein. The objective is to mathematically invert the simultaneously measured laser light extinction and light scattering at different wavelengths to yield accurate and reliable reconstruction of the particle size distribution. The proposed objectives of the Phase I program include developing suitable inversion schemes for the stable inversion of the extinction and scattering data, perform multi-wavelength extinction and scattering measurements in the laboratory using sooty flames, optimize the measurement scheme to meet the requirements of the Navy, and develop a conceptual design of the overall measurement system. A Phase I Optional program has been included in this proposal. The design of the various optical components will be undertaken during the Phase I Optional period. In the Phase II program, a prototype of the measurement system will be developed and thoroughly tested. After incorporating final improvements to the optics, electronics, and software, the prototype system will be delivered to the Navy.
