Research abstract

65074 TESLA is a 0.5 TeV electron-positron collider concept based on use of superconducting cavities driven at 1.3 GH by radio frequency (rf) amplifiers that deliver 10 MW peak power, with 1.7 millisecond pulses at a 10 Hz rate. A multi-beam klystron, now under development, is one candidate for the TESLA rf amplifier, however, TESLA designers desire a second source for an amplifier. This project will construct a prototype 1.3 GHz magnicon based on a previously-developed preliminary design. During Phase I, an integrated engineering design for the 10 MW, 1.3 GHz magnicon will be completed. This will include engineering designs for the magnicon rf circuit, the high-power beam collector, the magnet system, the electron gun, and a pulse modulator. Simulation studies will also be carried out to refine the existing preliminary design. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The high-power magnicon should become a viable contender as the rf amplifier for driving TESLA. TESLA¿s first stage will require approximately 600 such high-power amplifiers, an application that alone represents a potential $100 million business opportunity. Additional markets for these amplifiers could emerge as drivers for accelerators in a fourth-generation light source, and in the remediation of gaseous and liquid polluted waste streams.
