Research abstract

THE OPTACON DIRECT-TRANSLATION READING MACHINE FOR THE BLIND HAS BEEN WIDELY DISSEMINATED IN SCHOOLS. THE "OPTACONPLUS" OUTPUT SYSTEM WILL ALLOW THE OPTACON TO INTERFACE TO A WIDE RANGE OF TYPING, COMPUTING, AND PRINTING DEVICES, THEREBY EXTENDING THE OPTACON FROM A READ-ONLY SYSTEM TO A NOTETAKING, EDITING, PRINTING, AND ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM. THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF OPTACONPLUS WILL BE INVESTIGATED. A LABORATORY PROTOTYPE WILL BE DESIGNED, CONSTRUCTED, AND EVALUATED, THEN PRELIMINARY PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS WILL BE WRITTEN.
