Research abstract

Corrosion is a serious problem. Losses due to corrosion are estimated to be 70 billion dollars annually, spread among all segments of the U.S. economy. Strong corrosion preventive measures are required for military and naval equipment. However, recent fleet user surveys cast doubt as to the effectiveness of basic corrosion training currently being conducted. To address this problem, LSI will: (1) determine the extent to which existing training content is up-to-date and uses state-of-the-art training technology; (2) examine available training methodology, including development tools; (3) develop a preliminary course outline; (4) establish hardware and software requirments; (5) match delivery method to material to be taught; and (6) develop a demonstration lesson. The Phase I effort will identify comprehensive and complete information on corrosion control, an optimal CBT authoring package for the predicted level of technical training, cost effective hardware recommendations for delivery of the CBT courseware, and a course outline that will form a basis for the development and implementation of the entire corrosion control curriculum. The culmination of this phase will be a demonstration lesson displaying the capabilities of the authoring package implemented by the training design and development team.
