Research abstract
Millimeter waveradars are small and have narrow antenna beams. They are potentially well-suited for close-range fire control and target tracking. In particular, the Army is interested in a groung-based millimeter wave missile launcher radar that will track its missile and the target, then issue differential guidance commands to the missile. The problem is that it is difficult to track targets at low elevation because both the target and its reflected image are somtines both in the antenna's main beam. Flam & Russell, Inc. (FR) understands the problem because it has built monopulse antennas. FR is confident it can solve the problem because it has built modern direction finding systems that specialize in finding signals in multipath. The proposed solution consists of combining the squinted beams available from a monopulse antenna using variants of modern direction finding algorithms and advances in millimeter wave hardware. FR proposes to evaluate several strong candidate solutions through analysis and simulation, consider the ease of hardware implementation, and choose the algorithm that performs best in theory and has a change of being built with modern hardware.
