Research abstract

A low-profile low-cost electro-acoustic velocity detector for pressure release mounting will be modeled and developed. Because of the pressure release condition, the detector must be sensitive to the velocity component of the incoming wave rather than the pressure which vanishes on a pressure release baffle. The small profile will allow the detector to be mounted directly on pressure release coatings and the low cost will allow a large array of these units to be distributed over the baffle. The effective density of the element will be adjusted to match the baffle imbedding layer for minimum disturbance and maximum performance. The radiating area will be maximized to minimize flow noise detection. An innovative shallow oval shell configuration which reduces the number of required elements and also yields a lower cost is presented. Center and edge support configurations of this new flexural bender design are presented.
