Research abstract

50639-98-I An Advanced Concept for Cost-Effective, Modular Biomass Power Systems--Manufacturing and Technology Conversion International, Inc., 10220-G Old Columbia Road, Columbia, MD 21046-1795; (410) 381-4200 Dr. Ravi R. Chandran, Principal Investigator Mrs. Amal M. Mansour, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82613 Amount: $75,000 A burgeoning market is developing for cost-effective, modular, small-scale (10 kWe to 5 MWe) biomass power systems. The systems are needed in remote rural areas, in local areas of developing countries which lack premium fuel and have limited biomass supply, and in areas with biomass waste disposal or radioactive/chemical contamination problem. This project will analytically and experimentally develop a thermoelectrochemical biomass power generation system that is modular, economical, very efficient, environmentally nearly non-intrusive, climate change neutral and a ¿green¿ power generator. In Phase I, technical and engineering feasibility will be established for the thermoelectrochemical system using analysis, computer simulations, design, and innovative system integration. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should aid rural electrification and development, enhance biomass utilization, enable agricultural and livestock waste disposal, facilitate the cleanup of areas with radioactive/chemical contamination, motivate and ease the development of small-scale power systems for defense applications, and enhance U.S.-International commerce._
