Research abstract
Many small and medium businesses need an efficient, automated system for configuration management and inventory control. However, these businesses cannot afford the associated large capital expense to implement a system for this. Today, the process mainly consists of manual methods which are labor-intensive, inefficient, error-prone and expensive. Devsoft proposes a low-cost off-the-shelf software product to solve this problem. The product will leverage emerging standards in databases, networking, client-server, remote-access, electronic mail and growing Internet and modem use. This inexpensive, labor-saving and reliable software automates processes such as hardware change control, parts control, maintenance of failure and reliability data, revision of hardware system configuration etc., all in a single turnkey, extensible, integrated multiplatform product. This innovative product empowers decision makers by giving them real-time access to inventory information, failure analysis and reliability data from the database, packaged in an intuitive yet flexible format. The technologies employed in this project are new and innovative and have not been implemented in any comparable products. Phase I will provide the foundation to develop a functionally working product in Phase II and low-cost commercial product in Phase III. Devsoft has identified ten distinct market segments and four distinct target markets for this product.
