Research abstract

A rugged CD-ROM optical disk drive utilizing a commercially available drive will be developed for use in harsh environments. Techniques for using optical disk drives in space-based flight experiments will be adapted for use in airborne, shipboard, and fielded applications. These include: suitable mechanical and electrical interfaces, shock/vibration isolation, and extended operating ranges. Efficient use of commercial-off-the-shelf elements will serve to reduce overall cost.
