Research abstract

Ceramic materials with the general formula (1-x)Bi(Me)O3-xPbTiO3 (Me = Sc, In, Yb, or Fe) have been shown to have Curie temperatures ranging from 450 to >600¿C, 100 to > 250¿C higher than the highest temperature PZT compositions. Furthermore, theBi(Me)-PT materials have room temperature piezoelectric properties equivalent to those of Type I and II PZT's, the materials of choice for temperature stable sensor and actuator applications. The new materials are expected to be beneficial for automotive, aerospace, or well drilling applications where devices such as piezoelectric fuel injectors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, or acoustic transducers are currently performance limited by the maximum operating temperature of PZT (<200¿C).For the Phase II program production of Bi(Me)-PT ceramics will be scaled up to pilot levels (500 to 1000 kg of powder per year and/or 1000 to 2000 3
