Research abstract

The objective of the task is to develop materials, formulations, and processes that will withstand the effects of underwater explosions to help ensure the survivability of vulnerable, wet components and systems. Candidate microvoided polyurethane composites, fiber-reinforced microvoided polyurethane composites, and synthetic rubber materials will be designed, fabricated and evaluated. Laboratory tests will include measurements of the dynamic Young's modulus and loss factor, compression, and sound speed. Additional testing Will include measurements of hardness and specific gravity. The project will produce an optimum microvoided polyurethane composite for use as a shock wave ial. The needed knowledge base for attenuating foam (SWAF) material. The needed knowledge base for efficient design of fiber-reinforced microvoided po composites and synthetic rubbers will be established. Materials for Phase II manufacturing development and underwater explosion testing will be developed.
