Research abstract

70152 Interest has increased in high-energy-density, high-power-density, and high-voltage-rating capacitors for the future next-generation electron-positron linear collider. Because the Equivalent Series Resistance of the capacitor must be small to meet the cycle efficiency specification, novel electrode/electrolyte materials will be required to simultaneously reduce the cost while increasing the performance of the capacitor. This project will develop and test an all-solid polymer electrolyte Hybrid Electrochemical-Electrolytic Capacitor design that, yields a highly efficient, long-life, low-cost, low-ESR device to be used for future next-generation electron-positron linear colliders. During Phase I, hybrid capacitor units will be fabricated and characterized to demonstrate feasibility. The units will be evaluated and compared to standard capacitors to evaluate the overall benefit of the hybrid capacitors. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: An all-solid hybrid capacitor design, yielding a highly efficient, long-life, low-cost, low-ESR device with a simplified packaging process should be applicable to the next-generation electron-positron linear collider, automobile hybrid drives, electric vehicles, and load-leveling applications. Other uses include charge storage devices to provide burst to backup power for military communication applications and memory backup, and pulse power sources for defibrillator and neurological microstimulators.
