Research abstract

A DEEP BASED SYSTEM WOULD PROBABLY BE LOCATED BELOW THE WATER TABLE. IT WOULD THEREFORE BE SUBJECT TO SOME WATER INFLOW IN ALL PHASES OF CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION, ALTHOUGH THE RATE OF INFLOW WOULD BE A FUNCTION OF THE GEOLOGIC FORMATION IN WHICH THE BASE IS SITED. THE MANAGEMENT, CONTROL, AND REMOVAL OF THIS WATER IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SURVIVAL AND THE COMPLETION OF THE BASE. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SYSTEMS FOR MANAGING THIS INFLOW IS THEREFORE OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. THIS PROPOSED PHASE I STUDY WILL ADDRESS PROBABLE INFLOW RATES, ESTABLISH PARAMETERS FOR BASE CONFIGURATION TO ALLEVIATE INFLOW AND PROMOTE AUTOMATIC WATER COLLECTION AT SELECTED POINTS, WATER STORAGE RESERVOIRS AS A SOLUTION TO THE DISPOSAL PROBLEM OR AS AN ADJUNCT TO THE PUMPING PROBLEM, THE SELECTION OF PUMPED WATER DISPOSAL POINTS, THE SELECTION OF TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION FOR WATER DISPOSAL CONDUITS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF PROBABLE PUMPING HEADS, THE SELECTION OF WATER DISPOSAL PUMPS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ACCEPTABLE INFLOW RATES AS A FUNCTION OF POWER SUPPLY, AND THE SEALING OF RUPTURED LINES TO SEAL OFF SUDDEN INFLOW.
