Research abstract

FIBERTEK PROPOSES TO EXTEND THE CAPABILITY OF THE NEUTRON SENSING LONG COUNTER TO LOW RESOLUTION NEUTRON ENERGY DISCRIMINATION AND GAMMA RAY REJECTION THROUGH THE USE OF LITHIUM DOPED GLASS SCINTILLATOR FIBERS. FIBERTEK INTENDS TO INCORPORATE (6)LI- AND (7)LI-DOPED GLASS SCINTILLATOR FIBERS INTO A PROTOTYPE LONG COUNTER DESIGN. CURRENT LONG COUNTERS CAN ONLY PRODUCE A FLAT RESPONSE TO INCIDENT NEUTRONS, WITHOUT PROVIDING INFORMATION REGARDING THE NEUTRON ENERGY. FIBERTEK BELIEVES THAT ITS DESIGN CAN ADD NEUTRON ENERGY SPECTROSCOPY AND GAMMA RAY DISCRIMINATION CAPABILITY TO THE FLAT RESPONSE PROVIDED BY PRESENT LONG COUNTERS. LOW RESOLUTION ESTIMATION OF INCIDENT NEUTRON ENERGIES WILL BE PERFORMED BY COLLECTING COINCIDENT PULSES FROM EACH END OF A FIBER OPTIC BUNDLE AND ANALYZING THE DETECTED PULSE HEIGHTS. COMPARISON OF THE OUTPUT PULSE HEIGHTS FROM PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBES COUPLED TO EACH END OF THE FIBER BUNDLE CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE POSITION OF ABSORPTION ALONG THE FIBER OF EACH THERMAL NEUTRON. THE POSITION OF THE IMPACT POINT RELATES TO THE NEUTRON ENERGY, SINCE HIGHER ENERGY NEUTRONS WILL TEND TO THERMALIZE DEEPER WITHIN THE MODERATOR.
