Research abstract

The objective of this proposed Phase I SBIR is to develop the technology that will enable the production of ultra-lightweight, meter class space optics. The research will center on the various destabilizing environments that can affect the long-term stability of precision optics fabricated from polymer matrix composite materials. Several design options will be analytically evaluated for their capability to meet the requirements for very low weight, large size (greater than 1 meter) and long-term stability under exposure to space environments. COI will leverage off its prior and current activities in related areas to perform a parametric study of the design options which will establish relative performance capability of each option. If successful, this technology will provide advanced composite mirrors that:1. are ultra-lightweight (5 to 10 Kg/m{super 2);2. have performance in the visible and near-visible range;3. are 1 meter or larger in diameter;4. are compatible with operation in the space environment.
