Research abstract

Synchrotek Inc. proposes to design, during Phase I, a 10 kW and a 20kW generator for application as a power unit for HMMWV and other light tactical vehicles. The generator will be desinged in an "in-Line" configuration, mounted between the engine and the transmission of the vehicle. The frame of the generator will be mounted to the bell housing of the 6.2 or 6.5 liter engine and the rotor will be directly coupled to the drive shaft. This type of system will provide electric power at 120/208V, 60 Hz. The generator weight goal is less than 100 kgs. Synchrotek personnel were responsible for development of the 20 kW in-line generator developed for the Army R&D Center. The unit was to provide 20 kW power and replace a 15 kW MIL-STD towed power unit. The weight advantage was 230 kgs of in-line generator compared to 2300kgs of towed power. The Phase I work effort for the present proposal will consist of a comprehesive assessment of mechanical, electrical and thermal trade offs for an optimum configuration of a 10 kW and a 20 kw generator running at 1200 rpm and 1800 rpm, respectively. The phase I effort will result in a preliminary design of the two generators and preparation of drawings and documentation addressing the electrical, mechanical nad thermal considerations. The trade off between air-cooled and liquid-cooled system will be discussed with the customers durind the pahse I study. The purpose of phase I is to prepare the base line approach for a detailed design and fabrication of the generator during phase II.
