Research abstract

Smart or adaptive structures comprised of shape memory alloy wires or thin films embedded within composites to remotely control the response of the composite to external stimuli. In contrast to the preset state-of-the-art, the bond strength of smart actuators to the surrounding polymeric composites and their thermal cycling response is proposed to be enhanced significantly by a metal matrix composite approach wherein the actuator is itself a composite material rather than a monolithic material. This will be possible using the unique thin film composite technology described herein. This Phase I program will demonstrate the proposed technology to manufacture composite "micro-actuator." In addition, the fabrication of larger wire or plate structures starting with these "micro-actuators" will also be demonstrated. Finally, the improved bond strength to resin matrix composites and improved thermal cycling response will also be demonstrated.| Benefits: In addition to vibration and noise control in space structures, military and civilian planes, automobile and truck cabin, submarine hulls, and transformer housings, such smart materials will also find applications in drivers for relay switches, micropositioners for robotic arms, cone vibrators for speakers, fuel injection valves, adaptive optical systems, etc.
