Research abstract

"Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs), substances having selective binding sites molded into the polymers, combine the selectivity of antibodies with the robustness of polymers. Recent advances by Semorex provide MIPs having affinity bindingequal to or better than those of antibodies. This enhanced capability allows us to prepare MIPs that effectively bind chemical weapons at low concentrations and, ultimately, MIPs that bind biological targets. MIPs can be easily integrated into a wide rangeof detection systems including immuno-assay-like kits and biosensors. In comparison to existing systems, the MIP approach is simple, usable on-site, inexpensive and can be applied in many different formats. They are unique as selective binders and can beproduced as an aerosol, film or coating for use in protection against, or decontamination of, chemical and biological weapons. Semorex seeks to develop high affinity binding MIPs that target chemical weapons. Additional applications include environmentprotection and medical diagnostics. A second goal is to produce detection or countermeasure systems incorporating MIPs for commercial use. We are targeting organophosphate (OP) nerve gases. Initial research will be conducted with a model OP, diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP). DFP is a commercially available acetylcholine esterase (AchE) inhibitor which is structurally and chemically similar to the nerve gases, sarin and soman. The technology deve
