Research abstract

The DoD has an ongoing need to improve its capability to develop and assess complex computer-based systems. Recent developments in process support technologies, in general, and process modeling, in particular, have brought this technology area to the forefront in system engineering. However, the engineering of complex computer-based systems imposes additional process representation and process management requirements to those imposed by the traditional uses of process modeling (i.e., software engineering, business process re-engineering, human-system integration, microelectronics design, and workflow automation). The proposed effort is concerned with: 1) developing a semantically correct and complete representation for modeling, evaluating, and assessing complex computer-based systems; 2) creating a concept prototype of a process modeling tool for system design evaluation, and assessment; and 3) demonstrating its application on a sample Navy problem.
