Research abstract

Not Available The objective of this effort is to exploit developments in fast, low voltage nematic liquid crystal technology (NLC) to build a phase-only spatial light modulator. In Phase I our plan is to use existing Displaytech CMOS VLSI backplanes to build an experimental 256x256 pixel, 1000 frame per second SLM with 8-bit analog control and a 360 degree modulation range. We will perform tests to quantitatively evaluate the performance of experimental devices, and that identify areas needing further development in Phase II. In Phase II our goals are to build an optimized CMOS VLSI backplane for this application, to optimize the NLC mixture for the fastest possible phase modulation and greatest dynamic range, and to be able to manufacture high quality commercial devices using Displaytech's existing production lines. SLMs as large as 1024x1024 pixels are feasible, or as small as 128x128.
