Research abstract

This proposal is to investigate a concept of a shock producing component that will be the basis of a machine to remove deteriorated concrete pavement. The principal has been proven feasible, but further demonstration has to be accomplished to proceed with application and expense of continued development of a Road Remover/Recycler. This machine will move continuously on a lane width of pavement and process a mile of Portland Cement Concrete, separate the steel, and deliver byproduct into trucks and container in 8 to 10 hours. This will reduce costs of concrete removal to one third that of present methods and cut the time of removing concrete off site to ¿ to 1/3 the time. No equipment with this capability (replacing 6 operations by a single continuous one) is in existence today. The Road Recycler will also bring concrete replacement nearer being competitive to asphalt. Thus the proving and demonstration of the basic component of such a machine is practical in view of high expense to demonstrate the full operational system. The balance of the hardware is state of art. The Hammer-Anvil component is th key to the total machine as the shock technique take advantage of the fracturing feature occurring to compressive and tensile strengths at much lower level than normal stressing of brittle materials.
