Research abstract

40840 November 13, 1996 Omega-P, Inc. An electron-positron collider is thought to be an alternative approach towards achieving some of the same physics goals as the canceled Superconducting Super Collider. At present, no acceptable technology exists for providing the RF sources needed to construct a viable high energy collider. This study will show that an efficient, cost effective device can generate high-power radiation at frequencies at 20 GHz and above, with high conversion efficiency and high electrical efficiency. The Phase I project includes: (a) optimized output waveguide design; (b) improved flexibility in magnetic profile assignment; (c) optimized level and phase for injection phase locking and dynamic suppression of competing modes; and (d) design of an efficient depressed collector to recover energy from the spent beam. These measures are expected to show that a prototype can be built and demonstrated in Phase II. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: A mechanism for generating high-power cm-wavelength radiation to drive a future electron-positron collider could create a new product line for industry. Demonstration of highly efficient harmonic conversion, using an existing S-band microwave klystron, would presage a large market for klystrons, converters, and associated high-power microwave components.
