Research abstract

The broad nature and variety of data types produced by multi-modal sensors encourages a multi-tiered solution. A 3-tiered solution is proposed. Tier 1 consists of data pre-processing for each modality at the sensor node. Algorithms at this stage will consist of lightweight mathematical operations capable of running in a microcontroller environment. Such algorithms will extract important features from raw data. Tier 2 will combine data from multiple modalities at the sensor edge, accomplishing R1. Each modality will have important features extracted in tier 1, and exported to tier 2 in a universal format. Tier 2 algorithm will combine each tier 1 output for processing. Tier 3 algorithm will receive tier 2 output from a network of microcontrollers. Tier 2 output will consist of identification and classification probabilities from each sensor in the network. Tier 3 algorithm will combine this data with known locations of each microcontroller.
