Research abstract

The ability to rapidly locate and use the most relevant information is a key to success in time-stressed decision-making during the conduct of C2 operations. However, search engines today continue to suffer from poor precision (i.e., retrieve too manyirrelevant items) and/or poor recall (i.e., not enough of the Web is covered by well-categorized directories or taxonomies). Meaning-based, context-sensitive (MBCS) search engines are seen as a promising direction to overcome these problems. To this end,in Phase I we produced the system concept, design, and concept prototype of a meaning-based, context-sensitive (MBCS) search engine. At the heart of this search engine is a domain-specific ontology and dynamic characterization of context. To demonstratethe efficacy and effectiveness of this search engine, the tactical context will be provided by Knowport, a knowledge access portal for collaborative C2 planning and execution. Phase II of this effort will implement, demonstrate, and transition the MBCSsearch engine as part of this knowledge access portal to customer-designated sites and programs.Meaning-based, context-sensitive search will improve the precision and recall of searches in time-sensitive dynamic environments. Potential commercialapplications of the R&D include Customer Relationship Management, Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, and Business Intelligence.
