Research abstract

51132-98-I A Novel Ultra Violet Photodetector Array--NZ Applied Technologies, Inc., 8A Gill Street, Woburn, MA 01801-1721; (781) 935-0300 Dr. Yabo LI, Principal Investigator Dr. Peter Norris, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82629 Amount: $74,765 Current photosensitive semiconductor photodiodes have problems with quantum efficiency, sensitivity in the ultra-violet (UV) range, stability, and radiation hardness, all of which limit their applications in nuclear physics research. In this project, a novel, UV-visible, avalanche photodiode array technology will be developed. Advantages of the new technology include low cost (compared to photomultiplier tubes), high radiation hardness, reduced signal loss and custom fabrication for specific applications. Phase I tasks include material growth, structure design, device processing, and testing. Feasibility of the photodetectors will be demonstrated through the use of modeling and iterative fabrication runs. Prototype photodetectors will be fabricated and tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Commercial applications for high sensitivity photodiode arrays include engine and environmental monitoring, flame detection, security systems and medical equipment._
