Research abstract
High speed ballistic and explosive photography demands improved high intensity light sources. The surface discharge is a versatile source of pulsed radiation that possesses many attributes making it a favorable candidate for illuminating high speed events. These attributes include: 1) high spectral radiance; 2) repetitive pulsed operation with a programmable waveform (pulse duration and pulse repetition frequency); 3) capable of large area emission and large pulse energy; 4) high radiative efficiency; and 5) the capability to enhance the output in designated spectral regions. The surface discharge achieves this wide range of capabilities by virtue of its large number of adjustable parameters which permit it to be optimized for specific applications. The Phase I program will determine the required individual pulse parameters capable of providing the required high intensity illumination and provide a preliminary design for the prototype repetitive pulse system.
