Research abstract
The objective of this project is to develop real-time, lossless or near lossless data compression techniques for high data rate sensors such as EO, IIR, MMW seekers, and fiber optic guidance system. Wavelet transform accepts nonstationarity and is well localized in both space and frequency domains and it is also orthogonal to avoid redundancy in the wavelet transform. Vector quantization, which encodes a sequence of samples rather than encoding each sample individually, has been proved to be a powerful tool for digital image compression. Using vector quantization to encode the wavelet transform coefficients is a novel method to exploit the advantages of both wavelet transform and vector quantization. In this proposal, we propose a design and implementation of data compression techniques by using wavelet transform and vector quatization to achieve the goal of real-time lossless data compression. The research of this project, which takes advantages of the latest development in image analysis and compression, shall lay a solid foundation for the development of the real-time lossless data compresison system. The first step is to provide detailed analysis of the proposed design and a plan for experimental evaluation. The second step is to develop hardware and software and perform laboratory demonstrations to verify the technical approach.
