Research abstract

A suite of sensors is required to detect, analyze, track, and report position, speed, and direction of travel of watercraft in interior waterways. WaveBand's millimeter-wave sensors have demonstrated the capability to provide watercraft data whose attributes contain the position, speed, and direction of travel of these objects. The sensors are also capable of furnishing near-photographic quality images of the surveilled scene. Multisensor data fusion may be readily applied to combine the millimeter-wave sensor data with those from other sensors, such as foliage penetration radars and visible spectrum or infrared sensors that provide higher resolution images of a scene under limited operating and environmental conditions. Through its STTR partner, the University of Arizona, WaveBand has developed algorithms that minimize the number of sensors needed to search a given region for potential watercraft targets. Phase II will result in the demonstration of a sensor suite in a relevant environment. The system design will meet data rate transfer and life span requirements. The probability of detection of the system against watercraft targets will be at least 90 percent. A path leading to the production of the Multisensor Traffic Monitor System will be determined.
