Research abstract

RMSV feels that with an integrated systems approach to the airless tire and wheel design using advanced modern materials, such as carbon, Kevlar or Spectra filaments in either a polyurethane or high toughness epoxy resin system, will allow theidentification and development of a logical, fieldable, robust and durable airless tire and wheel solution. It is anticipated that future ground forces will demand high speed mobility over a wide variety of terrain without delays due to flat tires or minor damage. Reducing the logistical burden imposed by tire servicing and carrying of spare tires and wheelswill help make a future force more agile and more rapidly deployable. An advanced non-pneumatic, damage tolerant wheel could provide many benefits for the Army's Future Objective Force. The potential market for an airless wheel meeting the necessary criteria would extend not only into existing and future DoD wheeled vehicles but also for more conventional commercial markets. Potential end uses of such a product would be any vehiclemarket environment where there is a significant chance of puncturing a pneumatic tire and any
