Research abstract

The traveling charge effect provides a means of improving gun launched projectile range performance by increasing launch energy while minimizing peak pressure. The concept of the traveling charge is to accelerate some portion of the total propellingcharge down bore with the projectile. CAES's traveling charge design concept consists of a canister assembly loaded with standard stick, gun propellant grains encased in a very high burn rate (VHBR) energetic inhibitor. This Phase II effort involvesdevelopment and demonstration of the functional aspects of the stick propellant encapsulated within a VHBR energetic inhibitor matrix under the gun launch environment. Activities to be undertaken include development of a suitable inhibitor compositionexhibiting very high stable burn rates at gun operating pressures and the required structural characteristics, details associated with manufacture of the VHBR inhibitor as well as processes for incorporation of this material with the stick propellant, anda series of subscale gun tests to evaluate performance of the traveling charge. Additionally, a series of characterization tests will be conducted to establish combustion behavior and sensitivity of the VHBR energetic inhibitor and traveling chargecanister assemblies.
