Research abstract

Multispectral Solutions, Inc. (MSSI) proposes the development of a low cost, low probability of intercept and detection (LPI/D), obstacle and terrain avoidance system for rotary wing aircraft. The system will provide pilots with early warning of impendingcollision situations and will provide them with ample time to manuever the aircraft out of extremis. The system will be based upon the use of MSSI's proven Ultra Wideband (UWB) radar technology, previously developed for autonomous flight vehicles.UWB radar has emerged as an enabling technology for object detection is support of manned and unmanned vehicle operations. The use of extremely short pulses having broad instantaneous power spectrum provides a unique excitation waveform for many targets. The demonstrated feasibility to detect very small diameter wires and other low RCS targets with a small, lightweight, low power radar now offers a viable solution to the detection of hazards to flight. As an added benefit, UWB waveforms offer a lowprobability of intercept and detection (LPI/D) signature, and hence low probability of interference, together with an anti-jam capability. Finally, because of the nearly all-digital nature of the UWB radar, a highly reliable and ruggedized design can beachieved. These features make the proposed approach very attractive for providing the military with a cost-effective, stand alone design suitable for a wide variety of aircraft. Under Phase I, a prototype system will be developed that is suitable forpreliminary flight test and evaluation.A low-cost, UWB radar has many commercial applications. These include commercial/non-military aircraft collision avoidance, aircraft landing aids, airport runway incursion sensors, intrusion detection, automobilecollision warning, automobile braking, and liquid level sensing.
