Research abstract

65248 The reduction of the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), from 850¿ - 1000¿C to 500¿ - 800¿C, would reduce operating cost and increase life while maintaining specified performance. This project will reduce the SOFC operating temperature by thermal spraying nanostructured yttria doped strontium titanate anodes, electrolytes, and cathodes. In Phase I, new, high performance thermal sprayed nanostructured thin-film yttria doped strontium anodes will be constructed and tested. The anodes will be coupled with a thermal sprayed new electrolyte and conventional cathode materials, tested for performance at moderate temperatures, and compared with conventional material manufactured cell systems. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Potential applications include high-efficiency SOFC systems for distributed electric generation or utilities, portable power sources for space and defense applications, gas sensitive monitor devices, and gas purification and separation
