Research abstract
The HALIA drone by LeVanta Tech addresses critical needs through its innovative float-and-fly design, providing a versatile solution that combines the best attributes of aerial and maritime surveillance systems. This platform is capable of floating indefinitely while conserving energy and flying at high speeds for rapid response. Its ability to deploy from vessels, shore, or air provides unparalleled flexibility in mission planning and execution. The drone’s low detectability and advanced sensor suite make it an ideal candidate for persistent ISR, capable of collecting and relaying real-time data with minimal risk of adversarial detection. The HALIA drone's solution to the ISR problem leverages a multi-faceted approach:The HALIA drone can float indefinitely, with its motors off to conserve energy, and only activate for high-speed flights when necessary. This allows for continuous monitoring and rapid response to emerging threats or targets. This capability significantly reduces the need for frequent refueling or recharging, thus enhancing operational efficiency and reducing logistical burdens.Equipped with a robust suite of sensors, including EO/IR systems and acoustic sensors, the HALIA drone provides comprehensive real-time data collection. Its ability to function as a mobile communication relay enhances the overall situational awareness and coordination among various ISR assets. This feature is crucial for maintaining domain awareness in regions with high adversarial activity and environmental challenges. The HALIA drone excels in the "picket" scenario, where a network of “Picket” drones (HALIA Group 2 UAS) floats in a predetermined area, communicating via a mesh network using Silvus radios to provide persistent surveillance. The Picket drones can be triggered by subsea, surface, aerial, or satellite assets to pop-up and visually inspect vessels in real-time. The Picket drones can also asymmetrically pop-up to accomplish long-range line-of-sight communications, enhancing the coverage and reliability of the surveillance network. The Picket drones can self-trigger using their EO/IR systems and AI algorithms, ensuring autonomous operation and rapid response to detected targets. Golden Bird drones (HALIA Group 3 UAS) would be Satcom enabled. EchoMAV, who would supply the integration of the visual and communication systems on the Picket drones, has ground station technology. The ground station technology could be integrated into the Golden Birds. Each Picket drone would be internet-enabled by the Golden Birds. An operator, using a simple graphic user interface, can select any of the Picket drones and review their camera feed. An operator can take control of any Picket drone or Golden Bird and fly it in real-time. Absent operator control, the Picket drones and Golden Birds would operate autonomously. For purposes of the deliverables under this Phase 2, we would demonstrate integration of the off-the-shelf camera and radio systems.
