Research abstract

STRATONICS proposes a high spatial resolution multi-color pyrometer for the accurate measurement of particle and surface temperatures for molten metal processing and thermal spray deposition facilities. The instrument will provide spatially resolved temperature measurements of particles in an inert gas metal atomization plume or thermal spray deposition system and is also capable of accurate, spatially resolved temperature and surface roughness measurements of the deposition surface. The high resolution, two-color pyrometer will provide an important process tool to obtain a detailed understanding of the dynamics of the spray deposition process and to optimize the process for maximum efficiency and performance. This instrument has the potential for significant increases in efficiency and cost reduction in metal parts and coatings for industries ranging from commercial and military jet aircraft, automotive components, oil and natural gas exploration and biomedical implants.
